Touch experience questionnaire

Participant Information Sheet

My name is Paula Trotter and I am conducting research for a postgraduate degree. I would like you to take part in this research by completing a questionnaire.

What is the project about?

A lack of social support is a known risk factor for depression, and a key part of social support is thought to be physical contact. Evidence suggests physical affection causes changes in the brain which may protect against depression. I am constructing a questionnaire to try and measure people’s experiences of and feelings about physical contact. I will then investigate the relationship between touch and depression.

Do I have to take part?

No. You can also withdraw at anytime without giving a reason.

What does taking part involve?

If you agree to participate in this study you will be asked to fill in an online questionnaire which will take about 20 minutes. It asks about your experiences and perceptions of touch as well as asking for some general information about your health, personality and social circumstances in childhood and at present.

Is the information I provide confidential?

Yes. It is not possible to identify you from your online responses, unless you choose to leave us your email address. If you do enter your email address your data will be treated as strictly confidential. Your email address will be stored on a separate database to your data. Only those concerned with this research project will have access to the information you provide.

Will I receive any compensation for my time?

At the end of the questionnaire you can enter a prize draw for £50. The prize draw will take place in June and the winner will be notified shortly afterwards.

Are there any reasons why I could not take part?

No, anyone can take part in this study.

What happens if I am upset by any questions or issues raised by this questionnaire?
